Nintendo Switch steps on the accelerator: 52.48 million units sold

The console closes the month of December 2019 with figures that exceed all possible estimates; almost 11 million units in a quarter.

Nintendo has made public its financial results for the last quarter of 2019 (FY3 / 2020), a period where Nintendo Switch has boosted its sales to stand at 52.48 million units sold, which gives a total of 10.81 million consoles only in the months from September to December.

Nintendo Switch, more than 50 million consoles in less than three years

The results have exceeded almost any forecast. The hybrid platform received last September a new member for the family, Nintendo Switch Lite, which has reported global sales of 3.24 million units; far from the remaining 7.58 million of Nintendo Switch, which is undoubtedly the option chosen by the target user of the console.

With this data and one more quarter ahead, Nintendo can overcome its best historical fiscal year in hardware sales by having 17.74 million units sold (April 1, 2019 – December 31, 2019) in these nine computed months. The forecast presented at the shareholders meeting held on January 30 leaves the total at 19.5 million units.

If you look at the software, there is also good news for the firm led by Shuntaro Furukawa. With 64.64 million units sold this past quarter, Nintendo Switch now has 123 million games sold (physical and digital) from April to December. If we count the accumulated figures since the machine's original launch in March 2017, we talk about 310.65 million games.

Regarding the list of best-selling games. The podium speaks the plumber's language: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (22.96 million units), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (17.68 million units) and Super Mario Odyssey (16.59 million units). Pokemon Sword and Shield, the 2019 biggest releases on Nintendo Switch, have sold in just a month and a half more than 16.06 million units sold.
