The 2027 Australian MotoGP will be staged on a newly upgraded Adelaide circuit, replacing Phillip Island after 2026. A €60‑million investment has reshaped the former street venue into a permanent track capable of meeting the highest safety standards required by the sport.
Adelaide Takes Over as 2027 Australian GP Host
Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP’s deputy CEO, confirmed that the redesigned circuit fulfills the series’ run‑off and safety criteria. The city‑based layout, unveiled last Sunday, diverges from Adelaide’s 1980s Formula 1 streets and incorporates extensive tarmac run‑off zones at the fastest corners, turns 2 and 3.
Safety Commitments and Run‑Off Calculations
Run‑off areas were defined using an advanced tool developed six years earlier in partnership with the University of Padua, Italy. Measurements were calibrated against expected relative speeds, ensuring gravel sections are avoided until after the high‑speed corners. The final circuit stretches 4.170 km, with approximately two kilometres open to regular traffic; the remainder was purpose‑built for racing.
Rider Sentiment and Video Showcases
During the safety commission meeting, riders viewed an AI‑generated video simulating a lap and reacted positively. Ezpeleta remarked that the visual preview surpassed the earlier conventional plans shown in February, citing smiles and growing anticipation from the competitors.
Tree Preservation and Environmental Strategy
Construction will remove 42 significant trees and 335 other classified trees, yet the project includes planting ten new trees for each felling, resulting in a net increase in green cover. The design preserved most original park trees where possible, and the track will not impede public use for several months each year.
Looking Ahead to October 2027
Adelaide is scheduled for the same time of year as the former Phillip Island race, during the Asian segment of the calendar. While no date has been fixed, the city’s infrastructure and safety commitment position it as one of the safest circuits on the MotoGP calendar.
