Alex Palou Overcomes Late Pressure for Nashville Win, Admits He Lacked Confidence

Alex Palou “was not confident at all” in outlasting late pressure to win Nashville

Alex Palou captured his 24th IndyCar triumph at Nashville Superspeedway, sealing a 27‑point championship cushion and giving Chip Ganassi Racing its 150th overall victory.

Chance Comes With Crisis: The Nashville Win

The race’s pivotal moment arrived on lap 122 when Palou’s pit crew swapped to fresh tires, just before teammate Scott Dixon’s hard rear‑end of Alexander Rossi ignited a full‑course caution on lap 123.

That caution turned a routine routine into a golden opportunity. Palou rode the yellow, moved up through the field during the first pit cycle, and assumed the front‑row lead on lap 131 out of 225.

Pit Stop Timing and Seamless Lead

Pit strategy was decisive. While the field settled behind the caution flag, Palou’s team positioned him on “primary” compound tires, a choice that would be revisited later in the night.

Patience paid off; Palou hauled the car to 97 laps led, a season‑high, and maintained a lead until the final stages of the race.

Tire War at the Final Restart

After the last caution on lap 185, the final restart with 31 laps remaining set the scene for a tire duel. Newgarden, still on “red” soft tires, staked a fresh, quicker stint; Palou stayed on primaries.

Despite the disadvantage, Palou’s defense through lapped traffic and a steady pace secured a 0.8731‑second margin over Josef Newgarden.

Victory Brings 150 Wins for Ganassi

This victory marked Palou’s third oval win and his 50th career podium. For the team, it was the 150th IndyCar victory in franchise history, an event welcomed by CGR manager Barry Wanser.

Wanser praised the “luck” that allowed the team to seize the caution and remarked that the car “didn’t crash” despite Palou’s aggressive attempts to push limits.

Palou’s Own Words on the Night

“I was not confident at all,” Palou said after the finish. “Newgarden was right there, and I was flat out. The draft helped him, but when he started to degrade, we gained a gap.”

Palou echoed a sense of relief that “everything worked” and that luck had played a constructive role given how the earlier caution helped the team.

Continuing Battlefield Momentum

With a 27‑point lead and a seasoned crew at his back, Palou sets up a formidable challenge for the remainder of the season. His chase for championship glory now rests on preserving his lead while Ford‑backed rivals tighten their pursuits.
