Animal Crossing: New Horizons began development before Nintendo Switch existed

The development team began working on the title before learning of the console's existence; specifically after the release of New Leaf in 3DS.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now on sale worldwide. The title, which will affect its post-launch content plan due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), began to develop before the team in charge knew of the existence of Nintendo Switch, the hardware where it has seen the light exclusively.

Aya Kyogoku, director of the long-awaited title, has revealed in an extensive interview with The Washington Post that the title began developing right after Animal Crossing: New Leaf went on sale in Japan back in 2012; a year later in the West. As he explains, it is not that they started working on their programming or design, but rather on conceptual tasks, an embryonic process.

Thus, the game started "without knowing or knowing about the Nintendo Switch hardware". Of course, although it can be assumed that it was initially in development for Wii U (2012-2016), in honor of the truth, it does not explicitly mention said console, so we do not know if Animal Crossing: New Horizons started out as a video game planned for Wii U. The only iteration of the saga that was launched in said system was Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (2015), a spin off focused on the experience through amiibo figures and mini-games in the form of party game.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons breaks sales records

After the first recorded days, the title has broken sales records in the United Kingdom (more sold than all previous installments together in its debut) and in Japan, where it is also being the fastest-selling game on Nintendo Switch.

Although it is not possible to save games in the cloud at launch, Nintendo has informed players of their plan to enable this function if we are members of Nintendo Switch Online throughout the year 2020. This backup can be made only in case of breakage console, theft or loss. You can read our Animal Crossing: New Horizons review through this link.
