Austin Hill Wins O’Reilly San Diego NASCAR Race with Dramatic Last‑Lap Pass

Austin Hill wins dramatic NASCAR O'Reilly San Diego race in last-lap pass

Austin Hill’s ferocious run on the O’Reilly road course left no doubt that he was destined for the checkered flag, stamping his 16th career victory after a 90‑minute grind against a field of 30.

Race Overview

The event opened with a mishap: a loose metal guardrail speared Corey Day’s chassis on lap one. After a 20‑minute caution, NASCAR halted the contest for a 25‑minute red flag while investigators inspected the damage. During the hiatus, Hendrick Motorsports received a special concession to replace Day’s radiator and reclaim the laps that would otherwise have been lost.

Once the green flag fell again, the race’s first stage erupted under confusion, as a tungsten plate on the apron slid through the engine bay. The grill debris forced the crew chiefs to decide between taking a short‑pit strategy or risking a penalty. Hill chose the latter, taking the stage win with a decisive overtake on Retzlaff, followed by Mayer, Alfredo, Kvapil, Smith, Creed, Green, Gray, and Sawalich.

Stage 2 – A Battle of Speed

Stage two began with a string of spins from Sammy Smith and a hard wall contact involving Thompson, leaking Lavar Scott’s engine coolant. The ensuing caution encouraged many to pit, including Hill and Crews, while Taylor Gray and Retzlaff clawed back to the front. Their duel flared into a side‑by‑side sprint for the final lap, with Gray finally pulling ahead after Retzlaff clipped the wall. Gray claimed the stage title, with Retzlaff and Anthony Alfredo trailing.

Stage 3 – Chaos and Catastrophe

A massive wreck on the third stage turned the track into chaos. Sam Mayer clipped the inside wall in Turn 1, sending Alfredo and itself into the outside barrier. More than 20 cars were sideways as officials called a caution for extensive wall repairs. During the delay, a fan entered the track, exchanged words with Sheldon Creed, fled across fencing, and was later arrested for disturbing the event.

As the field regrouped, Kvapil inherited the lead before Leland Honeyman spun, scattering a tire block that forced another caution. Retzlaff suffered a fuel shortage while trailing the pace car, and the rest of the field took the opportunity to pit. Gray took the front after pitting before the yellow, but the lead grew controversial as the race’s tension peaked. A final caution emerged from Jesse Iwuji after debris from his damaged fender threatened other cars.

Hill’s Final Laps

With ten laps remaining, Gray was pushed into the shoulder by a spinning Jimmy Iwuji, giving Hill a clean oval of track. In the gripping last lap, Hill’s power‑charged Chevrolet upset Gray’s lead, running a wheel‑hop that sent Gray into the side of the JRM machine. The following burst of momentum enabled Hill to sidestep Gray and cover the finish line.

Hill’s triumphant run on the white flag boundary forced him to invest in a tire burn that led to a tow back to the winner’s podium. During the post‑race ceremony, he ignited a dramatic burnout around the painted black No. 8 tribute for fallen RCR legend Kyle Busch, symbolizing the club’s first road course win.
