George Russell lost his chance to erase the points deficit at the Italian Grand Prix after a virtual safety car pit‑stop decision left him on worn hard tyres while teammate Kimi Antonelli switched to fresh mediums.
Virtual safety car blunder at Monza
During the VSC period, Russell stayed out, preserving tyre life but trading track position. Antonelli, who had already slid to the back of the grid because of a power‑unit penalty, opted for a new set of mediums and used the advantage to overtake and win on home soil.
The win gave Antonelli a 66‑point lead in the championship, pushing Russell toward second place in the standings.
Calls for clarification from Mercedes
Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle urged Russell to demand explanations from the team, questioning why the car did not receive a rapid pit stop during the VSC that could have kept him in front.
“He will have to sit down with Mercedes and ask, ‘How did that happen? I was leading the race but wasn’t given the preferential cheap pit stop?’” Brundle said.
Former W Series driver Naomi Schiff echoed Brundle’s sentiment, noting that Russell may later question “why I wasn’t allowed to pit”, and that a fresher tyre set could have saved him the victory.
Impact on the title fight
With Antonelli silver‑lining the win, the German team’s strategy proved decisive not only at race day but also at the neck of the points battle. Russell’s missed opportunity now requires him to confront Mercedes on how the decision was executed, as the margin to catch up widens.
