Coronavirus: telemarketers advise avoiding online gambling during business hours

Telephone companies call the responsibility of the thousands of Spanish players who will dedicate free time to streaming and online gaming.

The operating companies with activity in Spain have published a joint statement requesting that "rational and responsible" use be made of telecommunications networks during the period of alertness in Spain for the coronavirus and advise avoiding online gambling during business hours. .

Objective: avoid the collapse of IP networks during daytime

The confinement that is taking place in our country due to the coronavirus implies that hundreds of thousands of workers will carry out their work from home using an Internet connection. Likewise, millions of other young people will not attend school until —at least— well into April in the best scenario, which can precipitate collapses in IP networks due to unusual traffic.

In the case that concerns the players, it is recommended to avoid the use of leisure tools, video games, streaming or video playback from 08:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00, the considered working hours.

The statement has managed to bring together the main network operators in Spain to sign the document: Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Grupo Masmovil and Grupo Euskaltel.

What is asked and why is it so important

The document is very explicit and puts concrete data on the table to understand the importance of the situation. "Telecommunications networks, both fixed and mobile, are experiencing a traffic explosion in recent days as a result of the expansion of Covid-19," they begin by saying. We are talking about a 40% increase in traffic, while mobile use has skyrocketed by 50%, not to mention instant messaging services like WhatsApp (multiplied by 5) or Skype (multiplied by 4).

Despite the reinforcement to which the aforementioned companies have committed to guarantee the correct operation of the network 24 hours a day and an increase in the bandwidth of their servers, it will take several days to see their improvement effective. For this reason, they advise mass mailings, the download of files that are not strictly necessary, and leave this type of operation with files of weight for the so-called "off-peak hours"; that is, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (lunch break) and between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., night time.

"A rational and responsible use of networks will allow us all, service providers, companies and individuals, to ensure that we have quality communication that is sustainable over time," they conclude.

From FreeGameTips, we have published an article where we collect video game books and magazines that we can read for free during the period of confinement; also a selection of free video games on different platforms.
