David Coulthard defended Kim Kardashian after she declined an interview and lifted Kimi Antonelli’s towel at the Monaco Grand Prix.

During the opening grid walk, Kardashian passed Martin Brundle’s request for a short chat, then later appeared to pick up the champion’s towel following the race. The incident sparked a wave of online criticism, labeling her actions “unaware” and “inappropriate.”
On the “Up To Speed” podcast, the former 13‑time Formula 1 champion explained that he had greeted her politely while on the grid and was surprised by the backlash. “I was smiling, she spoke to me,” Coulthard said, noting that “people rarely speak to Brundle, but when they do the cameras are out.”

When asked what he discussed, Coulthard recounted offering a friendly question: “Having a nice time in Monaco?” She answered “yes.” He added he avoided asking her to name a favourite driver, “in case she wanted to say she was backing Lewis.” He warned against pinning a celebrity on a particular team or preparing a “scene” that would make criticism easier.
“If you invite high‑profile American figures into the paddock, the best approach is to keep the conversation casual,” Coulthard emphasized, arguing that the sport is still a new curiosity for many outside its core audience, and that people should not be judged for a lack of knowledge.
His remarks positioned the retired driver as a soothing presence amid a weekend charged with media scrutiny.
