Death Stranding: Kojima wanted players to feel compassion for others

The creator of the Metal Gear Solid series has designed asynchronous multiplayer features so that players are aware of each other.

The new of Hideo Kojima revolves around connections. Death Stranding threads its concepts through the relationships between different characters and locations. However, it transcends the video game itself and puts players in touch. In a video published by PlayStation, the head of the project has reflected on the reality of the Internet and explained that he designed asynchronous multiplayer functions so that players felt compassion for each other and helped each other.

"The Internet connection should make everyone happy, I think technology was created for that purpose," Kojima begins. "We have the opportunity to do things that were unimaginable 100 years ago, we can establish connections with people around the world and talk to them in real time." However, he points out, "that is not the reality", because protected by anonymity, some take the opportunity to "hurt each other and fight."

For that reason, he wanted the players to "connect indirectly, so that they could feel compassion." The creative has gone further and said that "that is the purpose of the video game." Death Stranding is a video game that uses the latest technology "to understand the true meaning of communication." It's not that I want them to connect per se, but rather that the players "understand what it means to be connected," so that the users themselves can decide their fate.

A grounds of positivity

According to Kojima, connection and disconnection "are synonyms." He sets an example that some players surely enjoy solo experiences more. In addition, it points out that other people have problems within society. There are those who have difficulties and turn to the network to make friends, but suffer when another player shoots them in the head.

"When they play this game, they feel alone, because they travel without any path laid out in order to connect the world, with almost no help from anyone." Even so, the tracks of other players are present, as well as the roads and other structures that are built to help others. According to Kojima, at the end of the game, many of these people will feel more positive and motivated.

Death Stranding is available as exclusive console on PlayStation 4. The title will go on sale on PC next summer 2020.
