Channeling enchantment lets a trident fire a lightning bolt at its target during a thunderstorm.
How Channeling Works In Minecraft
The enchantment is exclusive to tridents. When the weapon lands on a living entity or a lightning rod while rain turns to thunder, a bolt strikes the impact point.
Lightning only appears if the sky is actively storming; normal rain will not summon it unless the trident hits a lightning rod.
Ambient water or cover blocks the bolt—tossing a trident into submerged foes never triggers the effect.
Acquiring the Enchantment
There are two primary routes to equip a trident with Channeling.
- Enchanting Table – Build a single table surrounded by 15 bookshelves. Place a trident and a lapis lazuli, then select the option that grants Channeling. The table offers up to one level, and other perks can appear simultaneously.
- Enchanted Book on Anvil – First harvest a Channeling book from fishing, librarian trades, or loot chests in mineshafts, desert pyramids, ocean ruins, strongholds, ancient cities, or trial chambers. Anvil repair then combines the book with the trident to create the enchanted weapon.
Once equipped, Channeling remains at its sole level; it cannot be upgraded further.
Using the Lightning Ability
Activate a thunderstorm with the command /weather thunder or wait for the sky to turn stormy naturally.
Press the trident toward a mob or a lightning rod and release. As the weapon lands, a lightning strike matches the target’s position, igniting the surrounding area on fire.
Common tactical uses include converting a Creeper into a charged version, then detonating it near other mobs to collect mob heads or trigger environmental effects.
Channeling vs Riptide: Choosing the Right Tool
Both enchantments are mutually exclusive, so pick one that matches your play style.
- Channeling – summons lightning only during thunderstorms, adding an explosive joint attack.
- Riptide – propels the player in a forward spiral during rain or while swimming, enabling speed and short leaps; it requires either rain or water.
Additional compatible enchantments that boost Channeling’s power are Mending, Unbreaking, Loyalty, and Impaling.
Advancements and Strategic Uses
Channeling fulfills specific advancement criteria.
- Very Very Frightening – strike a villager with lightning.
- Surge Protector – shield a villager from a lightning strike while avoiding fire.
Beyond advancement triggers, skilled players deploy the lightning effect to manipulate mobs, create charged creepers, and gather mob heads strategically.
Mastering Channeling turns a standard trident into a game‑changing tool that echoes thunder on command.
