DTM is preparing for a ninth race weekend in 2027, announcing the possibility early in 2024.
Strategic Expansion Beyond Eight Grandstands
ADAC Motorsport Director Thomas Voss confirmed that the championship, which has run eight weekends and 16 rounds since its 2021 switch to GT3 regulations, is targeting a higher count. “Pencil in one extra weekend next year,” Voss remarked. The move is framed as a step toward “further internationalise” the series, with an eye on venues outside the German‑speaking core.
International Candidates on the Radar
Multiple circuits are being assessed under a new criteria package. Voss hinted that the field will focus on Europe and on tracks that can promise significant spectator turnout. “The event must bring crowds to the paddock,” he stressed, warning that empty grandstands are unacceptable.
Brno, Czech Republic
The Brno circuit, recently upgraded for MotoGP, stands as a strong contender. Its proximity to the German border and historic DTM ties—visits between 1988 and 2005—make it attractive. A new surface and paddock have revitalised the venue, potentially overcoming past attendance issues.
Hungary
The Hungaroring, long a Formula 1 staple and a former DTM host (1988‑2018), also fits the bill. With recent track refurbishment, it could offer the modern infrastructure and fan experience required for a costly European event.
Balaton MotoGP
While the new Balaton circuit remains controversial due to limited run‑off zones, its modern layout and dual MotoGP/GT3 potential places it on the shortlist, provided safety concerns are addressed.
Assen, Netherlands
Assen’s 2021 funeral capacity of 40,000 fans, halved by COVID but still impressive, still draws attention. Despite a lucrative contract at the time, DTM struggled to attract visitors in earlier years. Exposing the entire Endemol TV Group to free seats is a remnant practice that may recapture some of the earlier surge.
Italy
All nine tracks that can be imagined—Misano, Mugello, Monza, Imola, Vallelunga—have a shared issue: low spectator numbers. Even the presence of Italian manufacturers or drivers has failed to create a sustainable audience, and the absence of a crowd‑pulling star like Valentino Rossi is a notable drawback.
United Kingdom
Brands Hatch and Silverstone offer alternative British venues, but the lack of British drivers and the climate of Brexit make entry difficult. While the series has a loyal heritage in Britain, practical hurdles remain.
Turkey
After a brief return to Istanbul Park during Ayhancan Güven’s title season, momentum stalled following the driver’s departure from Manthey. The Turkish breakthrough event has been largely shelved.
France
Only Le Mans and Le Castellet appear to satisfy the DTM venue criteria. Magny‑Cours and Dijon are considered unsuitable due to location or ageing infrastructure.
Stakeholder Concerns and Financial Viability
Teams have expressed hesitation over additional cost. Marketing statements stress that a new venue will only make sense if it draws crowds, suggesting that transport and hospitality costs must translate into revenue. Track operators have approached ADAC directly, showing interest in joining the calendar.
Calendar Release Timeline
“We’ll have a 2027 calendar by August at the latest,” Voss said, noting that earlier years followed a similar deadline. This couched in a firm confidence that all offers will be reviewed and a decision reached promptly.
