DualSense Controller has 3 microphones, touchpad with new features & can be exchanged for a display?

Playfront

The inside of the new DualSense controller for the PS5 includes a lot more than Sony has previously announced. A current patent reveals that a total of three microphones are installed here to isolate ambient noise, for example.

The patent was registered in February and was made public just one day before the DualSense Controller was unveiled. The main task of the microphones is to filter out individual audio sources, such as the player’s voice, and to mute everything around.

The patent states:

“If there are three or more microphones in an array, it is possible that the location of a sound source relative to the microphone array can be located based on the relative timing of its sound as it is picked up by each of the microphones.

In combination with the known location and the known orientation of the controller (based on sensors and tracking methods) and by expanding the known location and the known orientation of the microphone array, the location of the sound source can be determined within the interactive environment. In addition, recorded sound can be processed to exclude sounds that are not from a specific area of the interactive environment.

The microphones are also able to filter cross audio sources correctly, for example when several players are talking. In combination with the position determination, it can be localized exactly from where the sound is recorded with the highest accuracy.

As Sony confirmed earlier, you no longer need a headset to spontaneously take part in a chat. The DualSense Controller is just as easy, but a headset will always be the better choice.

Touchpad gets new features

In addition to the microphones, the touchpad has also been expanded and, according to another patent, can be connected to the screen to serve as an interface, for example to visually reflect what is currently happening on the touchpad. Three examples are given:

“The touchscreen may display an image that describes areas of the touchscreen that correspond to various functions for interactive use.

A line may appear on the touchscreen indicating a gesture that the user can perform. The user can trace the line displayed on the touch screen to perform the indicated gesture.

The touch screen can be configured to display a gesture or gestures of the user by providing a visual trace line that indicates where the user has touched and moved his fingers on the touch screen. ”

The touchpad can also remember and save previous entries, which may be used for user-defined gestures. It is also mentioned that everything happens in real time on the touchpad and the screen.

Interchangeable touchpad?

Another patent, which is somewhat older, could also point to a replaceable display that replaces the touchpad or is already integrated as an optional function. According to the description, tactical displays such as a map, commands or menus could be shown here. God of War’s Huldra Store is an example.

How far this patent will ultimately be implemented remains to be seen. In any case, such a feature should speak considerably for the controller’s budget. However, such a display would be unthinkable as an accessory that is already preconfigured.
