DualSense: this is the PS5 controller, all its features

All the details of the new PS5 controller, which will be called DualSense and will incorporate some revolutionary functions, such as haptic technology.

Although its design was shown a few months ago, Sony has waited for the official presentation of the PS5 to reveal all the details of the controller that will accompany its new console. A very particular controller that has some “revolutionary functions” and that, first of all, says goodbye to the name that had accompanied all the Sony controls to date. We say goodbye to Dualshock and welcome DualSense. A new nickname that is motivated by the main and most striking of its characteristics: haptic technology.

DualSense haptic technology, the future?

The PS5 controller is made of a new material that improves the vibration to which we were accustomed and thus offers unprecedented tactile sensations. The Dualsense has all kinds of “actuators” located on the left and right grips, that is, many more areas (and much more specific) in which developers can activate vibration to cause new and fascinating reactions in the palm of the hand. It is undoubtedly one of those functions that must be tried to understand and appreciate (such as the Nintendo 3DS 3D), but media such as Wired have already been able to access it and speak of something “amazing”. They ensure that you can notice changes in the character’s footsteps depending on the surface on which he is walking and they even put specific examples: “Throwing myself into a pool, I felt the resistance of the water.” An ambitious addition that aims to revolutionize the sector and which well deserved a new name. So that we can test the haptic technology as soon as the console is released, PS5 will come free with the sequel to Astrobot, a pre-installed game that will take full advantage of DualSense.

From there the changes are more logical and natural. On the one hand, the triggers will improve their travel (something fundamental in, for example, car games, where they simulate being a pedal) and even more importantly, the triggers will be adaptive, or what is the same, will offer various levels of resistance so that pressing them feels different depending on what we are doing in the game. Thanks to this it will not be the same, for example, pressing R2 to shoot a bow that to fire a shotgun. It will change the reaction of the trigger itself according to the functions it has in games. On the other hand, things like the movement sensor, the internal microphone and speaker, and the 3.5 jack port are kept so that we can connect our headphones. Everything slightly refreshed, but practically identical. They also repeat the internal battery and the USB port to charge the controller (although this time it will be a USB-C port, the new industry standard, much faster).

All the features of the PS5 controller

One of the changes that would be missing to review is the new “Create” button, which replaces the current “Share” of the PS4 Dualshock and inherits all its functions. It will allow us to create and share content (screenshots or videos) both with our friends list and with social networks. And finally there would be the new control lighting, which has been reduced, dimmed and located on the sides of the touch panel. We leave you a compilation of all the features of the Dualsense mentioned and we remind you that a few months ago we made a comparison with the Xbox Series X controller, in case you want to know all its differences:

  • Rechargeable battery; USB-C power
  • Replacing the Share button with a new Create button
  • The touchpad returns and the lighting decreases and goes to its sides
  • L2 and R2 trigger triggers, with new angles and resistance
  • Haptic technology
  • Built-in microphone and internal speaker
  • 3.5 headphone jack port
