Epic Games is preparing a native Linux launcher for its storefront, yet it will not surface in the current preview release.
Development Status
An employee named onepercentnachos confirmed that Linux support is on the roadmap during a Discord discussion on August 13. He clarified that the team needs more than a simple native build, citing the broader work required to port the launcher. Epic is currently shifting from the existing Unreal Engine–based system to a more flexible launcher framework that could launch the entire store faster and more efficiently on Linux.
Implications for Linux Gamers
With a fully native launcher, users would no longer rely on third‑party tools such as the Heroic Launcher to reach the digital storefront. The improved platform compatibility could also make Epic Games more attractive to devices like the Steam Deck, which run on Linux‑based environments. A streamlined launcher would open the door to new handheld and desktop variants, easing cross‑device play across the Epic ecosystem.
Community Reactions
Not all voices are optimistic. Some community members teased that a native launcher might still lag behind Heroic in functionality, while others questioned whether Epic could meaningfully improve its current Windows experience. Those same users expressed that, even with native Linux support, expectations remain high for the overall performance and user interface of the launcher.
As the project advances, Linux gamers will still need to gauge whether Epic’s new framework justifies the wait, or whether the platform will continue to rely on external wrappers for the near term.
