In the lead‑up to the British Grand Prix, former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya warned that the championship‑leader Kimi Antonelli must defeat Mercedes teammate George Russell before he can stake a true claim to the title.
Montoya weighs Russell’s recent form
After securing a second victory this season in Austria, Russell converted pole position into triumph at the Red Bull Ring. He will be looking to replicate that performance before a home crowd at Silverstone.
Speaking on F1 TV’s weekend preview, Montoya stressed that the current showdown provides Russell with the decisive platform. “Well, what’s interesting is we talk about Antonelli all weekend, but the guy that put that last lap in qualifying was George,” he said. “The guy who won was George. And George was the one who got the trophy.”
Teammate dynamics revealed
Montoya noted that in practice sessions Antonelli seems more comfortable inside the Mercedes, while Russell reportedly copies many of his teammate’s moves. “In Austria I thought Kimi would start at the back and beat him, but George drove as hard as needed,” Montoya added. Russell did enough to manage his gap to Verstappen, protecting his lead without over‑exerting.
Silverstone could set the tone
With Russell set to take the race lead at the British track, Antonelli faces a crucial test: beating the podium‑clincher at Silverstone, or risk arriving home knowing the only verdict left is from a proven, battle‑tested champion.
