Far Cry 6, preview. The dictator's legacy

Ubisoft Toronto is in charge of the new video game in the series, set on an island ruled by a president-turned-dictator.

A country in crisis. Fifty years after the revolution, the island of Yara is far from recovering the lost splendor. Far Cry 6 takes us to this Caribbean setting, a fictional place consumed by guerrilla warfare and by the malpractice of its rulers. With an iron hand, the dictator makes and breaks things as he likes. Violence has broken out and seems to have no end, it has entered a self-destructive spiral that will end in freedom or in the most absolute oppression. Ubisoft has invited FreeGameTips to know the first details of this expected video game, which we will tell you about in the following lines.

Giancarlo Esposito, Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is also the Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, among other prominent roles. A few days ago, when the rumors began to spread, the interpreter revealed that he was working on a “huge” game. His role as the villain of the new Far Cry was soon confirmed. According to Ubisoft, they are highly impressed with the interpreter’s work, as he embodies a psychologically complex character.

The dictator, a fearsome villain

Antón Castillo won the elections questionably. Shortly after taking command, he became a dictator. Since then, the sound of revolution has echoed on the horizon. The weapons rattle and the explosions of the bombs are heard in the capital itself. But as we anticipated, the character of Anton is complex. Brutal in nature, he is the kind of person who firmly believes that what he is doing is for the good of his country. The end justifies the means. Half a century ago, a revolution overthrew the president and plunged Yara into a period of long instability. Antón is convinced that this revolution was harmful to the country, so he promised to restore the lost glory.

At Ubisoft they define him as a very powerful and intelligent man, but he is broken inside. It follows its values, always in accordance with its own internal logic. “I am the president, which means that one day you will also be the president.” This phrase appears in the trailer that was presented at the Ubisoft Forward digital event. The words are spoken by Antón, who addresses his 13-year-old son, little Diego (Anthony González, Coco). On the other hand, the introduction was created by Patrick Clair and his team, the professionals behind the Westworld intro and True Detective. The scores have been written by the composer Pedro Bromfman, known for his participation in Narcos. “We have surrounded ourselves with people from outside the industry who are very successful,” says the company.

Although the dictator loves his offspring, he treats it harshly because he thinks it is the best for his future. The events that are narrated are very representative of what is happening in the area. The president presents Diego with a grenade, an element that serves as a metaphor to symbolize the delicate balance of powers in Yara. “Our people do not know how to be happy, they are destroyed by opinions, noise and indecision, strangled by their own freedom. And even acting in good faith, even though you want the best for them and want to save them from themselves, they will hate you, Diego. Everything you say, do or believe will be wrong. ” He then warns you that you will be branded as evil, a monster, so the lesson is that you must be prepared for the worst. “This grenade is like our country, only it is made up of two parts: our people and you.” Your job is to contain the ring so that it does not explode everything definitively. Diego lives his own internal conflict, since he must decide whether or not to follow in the footsteps of his father.

Far Cry 6 is in the hands of Ubisoft Toronto, a studio that is in charge of a main title of the saga for the first time, although as usual, it has the help of other internal teams of the French company (Montreal, Berlin, etc. ). According to what they tell us, the project has been running for four years. The developers have chosen a fictional place for their narration, an impoverished island and subject to economic blockade. “What we like to say is that it is like a nation that stood still in time fifty years ago,” says Ubisoft. It has a unique personality, although Cuba is “an important source of inspiration.” All in all, it is mixed with the reality of other places. Yara is the “most ambitious open world in the Far Cry saga”, a Caribbean paradise built on the foundations of a slave state. President Castillo has used dissidents to make this Machiavellian dream possible. However, when you puncture too much, blood will flow. Brutal repression has lit the fuse of the revolution. The people have risen up and organized into different guerrillas that at first are fragmented. At that point, the player will have to step in to unify them and lead them to victory.

Everything we know about the protagonist

The protagonist is called Dani Rojas. Like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and other contemporary Ubisoft projects, you can choose between a male and female character. In both cases, it maintains the name and all its characteristics. This character was born and raised in Yara, in addition to being part of the army, despite the fact that he ended up deserting. Therefore, he has military training, something that will be very valuable for the guerrillas.

The island will have many different settings: rural settings, tropical beaches, urban areas, etc. The objective will be to reach the country’s capital, the city of Esperanza, where the presidential power resides, the Lion Guard. If they manage to enter the capitol and end Antón’s life, they can start building a free Yara. But the president has the army in his hands; also weapons, so there is a brutal imbalance between both controls. Still, players will have access to many weapons and gadgets, not to mention Chorizo. It is a dog ally that attracts attention because it walks in a small wheelchair.

Far Cry 6 has yet to reveal details about its gameplay, but Ubisoft promises new information in the coming months. The game will be released on February 18 on current and new generation PCs and consoles. Click here to discover all its editions.
