Fernando Alonso has declared that his next‑season decision will not hinge on Aston Martin’s pending upgrade package.
Silverstone’s 2026 campaign has stalled, with the AMR26 collecting a single point in the first eight Grands Prix and falling a full second behind rivals. Without new parts, the team is leaning on a substantive overhaul for the Hungarian race to address an overweight chassis and other performance gaps.
Team principal Adrian Newey told Aston’s press officer that an upgrade would give Alonso “clear, tangible progress,” and hopes the better car will persuade the 44‑year‑old double champion to stay through 2027. “Given his experience, his feel for the car, and his ability to guide development, he’s a tremendous asset,” Newey said.
Alonso countered that while an upgrade is significant, it “is not the only consideration” for his future. He added that, regardless of the car’s quality, other factors must also weigh into the decision. He will decide during the summer break following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Spaniard stressed the importance of the 2027 outlook, noting that the team’s deferment of upgrades since Bahrain “has left us lacking downforce, power and gearbox performance.” He said a successful Hungarian package would “give us a clear path and good momentum” heading into next year.
Alonso’s comments highlight that even high‑profile upgrades can be eclipsed by the broader development strategy as teams pivot toward the 2027 regulations.
