Ferrari and Peugeot have entered a new testing phase with upgraded Le Mans Hypercars as the 2027 World Endurance Championship looms.
Ferrari pushes the 499P towards a 2027 overhaul
The Italian factory unveiled a camouflaged 499P during a Monza session, masking aerodynamic changes that align with the team’s strategy to potentially use all four remaining “joker” upgrades for the 2027 season. Ferrari has so far deployed a single joker – an upgrade centered on brake cooling introduced in São Paulo, 2024 – and the Monza image suggests further development is on the horizon, though the exact focus remains undisclosed.
Monza is scheduled to host the final round of the 2026 season, following the cancellation of the Qatar and Bahrain rounds amid Middle Eastern conflict. Ferrari’s Monza session reinforces a commitment to maximise the 499P’s performance ahead of the 2027 opening in Qatar on 27 March.
Peugeot’s 9X8 revitalisation roadmap
In a press release that appeared the same day, Peugeot announced the continuation of the 9X8 evolution, with a fresh image of the chassis in plain carbon fibre at Paul Ricard. The French manufacturer is focussed on a package that will boost performance, efficiency and competitiveness, even as the 9X8 has yet to secure a race win in the Hypercar class.
Peugeot’s announcement comes after the brand reportedly used all five available evo jokers between 2022 and 2024, concluding its earlier refit programme during the 2024 season. The new regulation offers additional performance tokens to struggling manufacturers, which Peugeot intends to leverage. Any update that invokes an “evo” joker must receive approval from the FIA, ACO and WEC promoters.
Team principal Emmanuel Esnault highlighted that the 9X8 “has been in constant evolution since its debut,” and that the forthcoming developments will continue to elevate the car’s standing in the highly competitive field. The 9X8, introduced in the middle of 2022, currently sits seventh in the manufacturers’ standings at the Lone Star Le Mans event in Austin, narrowly ahead of newcomer Genesis.
Regulatory context for 2027 upgrades
Both Ferrari’s and Peugeot’s upgrade ambitions are limited by the FIA and ACO’s regulatory framework, which caps the number of “evolution jokers” each Le Mans Hypercar may deploy during its five‑year lifecycle. The most recent rule changes allow additional tokens for manufacturers who have exhausted their original quota, a proposition that Peugeot is prepared to pursue.
Approval processes are stringent: every joker usage – inside or outside the original allocation – must be sanctioned by the governing body, ensuring that upgrades do not compromise safety or cost stability across the championship.
2027 season’s timeline and technical focus
With the 2027 season set to commence on 27 March in Qatar, Ferrari is testing the 499P in full‑spec Monza conditions, whereas Peugeot is refining the 9X8 at Paul Ricard. Both teams are poised to make extensive use of the remaining joker allowances, tightening the competition window before the inaugural 2027 race.
These strategic moves underline that the 2026 season has already become a preparatory stage for 2027. As each manufacturer pushes technical boundaries within regulatory limits, the championship is set for a tighter, more engineering‑driven contest.
