FIA sets bold goal: slash 80kg from F1 car weight to boost speed

FIA reveals ambitious target to make F1 cars another 80kg lighter

With the 2026 Formula 1 rules, the FIA’s “nimble car concept” is already reshaping the sport.

Weight and Dimensions Cut

The new cars shrink a wheelbase by 20 cm and a width by 10 cm while the floor weight falls to a minimum of 768 kg, trimming 32 kg from the previous season’s baseline.

Despite the modest size reductions, the lighter chassis dovetails with a major drop in downforce, forcing drivers to wrestle the wheel more and breaking the perception that the cars run like trains on rails.

Aerodynamic Refocusing

According to FIA single‑seater director Nikolas Tombazis, the updated configuration cuts the chaotic “dirty air” to levels seen in the 2022 regulations and eliminates the tricked‑up front‑wing endplates and floor‑edge devices that undermined the concept previously.

He stresses that the new rules stifle clever hacks that could otherwise upset the uniformity the FIA seeks.

Driver‑Centric Dynamics

Tombazis notes that the diminished ground effect and slightly higher ride heights mean the cars are less brutal, yet still demanding enough for premier talent.

“They are not simple machines that anyone can push around,” he says. “The 22 best drivers in the world will still face formidable challenges.”

Regulatory Confidence

While teams still argue over power‑unit and energy‑management maturity, the FIA’s confidence in the chassis side of the formula grows, with the regulator calling the 2026 rollout a step forward.

“I think we are where we were at the start of 2022, but it feels more robust,” Tombazis added.

Future Goals of 2031

Looking ahead, the FIA plans a further 80‑kg weight cut and reduced power‑unit complexity for the 2031 regime, or possibly 2030 if consensus builds.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen a Formula 1 car become lighter than it was in the early 2000s,” Tombazis concluded, casting the 2026 regime as a pivotal turning point in the sport’s evolution.
