Final Fantasy VII Remake: "We wanted to respect the original, but with new skills"

The director of the combat system shares his impressions of the creative process of battles, now with elements of action.

Square Enix carries the responsibility of reimagining one of the classics of the video game on its shoulders. With Final Fantasy VII Remake, the Japanese company is not limited to improving graphics, but adapts the gaming experience to the times, and does so with new playable mechanics. One of the company's developers already said it, his intention is to respect the classic. Of course, as says Teruki Endo, director of the remake combat system, new skills have been added.

“In order to design battles that would surprise and not be boring,” says the developer, “we work hard to create several strategic elements for each boss and enemy. In addition, in the configuration of the battle systems for each of the characters, we wanted to respect the image of the original version, while introducing many new skills. ” Endo expects players to find their favorite combat style and combine "those skills with Matter."

The new production of Square Enix offers different ways to approach the fighting. In the options menu you can opt for a more action-oriented style, but you can also use the strategy. In addition, for all those who miss the system in turn of the original, the work introduced the so-called Classic Mode, which automates certain aspects so that the player only has to worry about choosing the specific commands.

He did not participate in the original Final Fantasy VII

Like other members of the Final Fantasy VII Remake team, the creative has gone back in time to remember the classic. “When I played the original version I did not do it from the perspective of game developer. I remember enjoying it as a player and feeling constantly surprised by the evolution of the games. ” In those times, they began to establish the three dimensions "and the dynamism of the battles" left a mark. "I would never have imagined that one day I would be on the side of the creators of video games or that I could participate in this title."

Endo comments that in his career he has created many action videogames, so that the act of remaking a combat system that was not designed with action as a focus was taken as a challenge. In this way, you have introduced elements of this genre into the system. "The production was completely different from those of pure action games, so the need to adopt a new design philosophy often arose." They tried to balance the action and the commands, something that, according to the developer, has worked.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be published in episodic format, although the chapters will have full game entity. The first installment will be available from March 3, 2020 exclusively for PlayStation 4.
