Ford will return as a fully‑fledged WRC factory team in 2028, launching a brand‑new Rally1 car for the 2029 season.
2028: Ford’s Factory Resurgence
The decision was announced at the WRC season finale in Sardinia, committing Ford to the championship’s new technical rules from 2028 onwards.
Under the banner of Ford Racing, the long‑time partner M‑Sport will run the factory squad, bringing the legacy of the 50‑year WRC relationship back to the front of the grid.
During the interim season, M‑Sport will field an upgraded version of the Ford Fiesta Rally2, equipped with a new update kit designed to keep pace with the 2027‑spec WRC27 cars.
2029: The New Rally1 Dream
Ford’s engineering team will construct a dedicated Rally1 chassis built to the 2027 regulations, set to debut in the 2029 campaign.
The process will involve integrating the latest drivetrain, aerodynamics and safety advancements mandated by the FIA, consolidating Ford’s position as a leading works team.
Legacy and Global Motorsport Interface
Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Racing, noted the event celebrates 125 years of Ford Racing and the 50‑year WRC legacy, citing the “direct connection to the fun and exciting cars.”
Ford’s motorsport footprint also includes Formula 1 engine supply to Red Bull, a planned return to the World Endurance Championship Hypercar class in 2027, and participation in NASCAR and Australian Supercars.
Industry Reaction
WRC promoter CEO Eric Boullier praised the move, highlighting Ford’s “extraordinary history in rallying” and stressing the relevance of rally as a global platform for the brand’s technology.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem added that Ford’s return gives the championship “real momentum” alongside other constructors already committed to the new regulations.
Competitive Outlook
Ford’s comeback will pit the company against Toyota, already committed to the new WRC rules, setting the stage for a fierce rivalry in the world’s most demanding series.
With factory support reinstated and a road‑to‑road philosophy, Ford is poised to leverage rally‑derived innovations across its vehicle range, reinforcing its status in four FIA World Championships.
