God of War, in what order to play the saga?

We review all the games of God of War according to the chronological order of the story and according to their release date, until we reach the GOTY of PS4.

More than 15 years have passed since Kratos first burst into our lives with an explosion of blood and mythology. A decade and a half that has served the God of War saga to establish itself as one of the best exclusives in the entire Sony catalog. Throughout this time we have had 7 different deliveries on 4 different platforms (PS2, PSP, PS3 and PS4), as well as a good number of compilations and remasters. Each of these installments has bordered on excellence and has crept into its own merits among the best titles of its generation. For this reason, it is never a bad time to replay the history of the Ghost of Sparta, or to catch up with those chapters of it that we have pending. For those who want to review starting in the franchise or review the Kratos epic, at FreeGameTips we have ordered all its deliveries according to the chronology of its history and according to the order of release, just as we have done with series like Resident Evil. Time to retake Olympus!

God of War: Ascension

One of the great forgotten of the saga. God of War Ascension launched in the twilight of PlayStation 3, just a few months before PS4, when people only had eyes for the new Sony console. At the plot level, the title is set before any other. Specifically, six months after Kratos mistakenly killed certain people. The story of the game tells us how, for this reason, the Ghost of Sparta rebelled against Ares and fought with the Furies, who wanted to punish him for his treason. An essential to know why Kratos ended up working for the rest of the gods and to know the beginning of his tragic story of redemption.

God of War: Chains of Olympus

The first spin off of the saga for PSP, Chains of Olympus, was carried out by Ready at Dawn and narrated some of the missions that Kratos had to do for the gods during the more than ten years that he was at their service, almost as if a replica of Hercules and his works. From defending Attica from the Persians to rescuing Helios from the hands of Morpheus, going through new confrontations against the great figures of Greek mythology, such as Persephone or Charon. History once again confronted Kratos with his past, gave him the chance to redo the mistakes made and gave rise to new encounters with Ares.

God of war

“It all started with you.” The original title, one of the most shocking and memorable hacks and slash on PlayStation 2. In God of War, and after more than ten years serving the gods, Kratos is tasked with the mission of killing Ares, the God of War. A mission with which he hopes to finally find peace and save Greece before proceeding with his suicide. Guided by Athena, Kratos sets out in search of Pandora’s Box, the only one with enough power to fight Ares. His journey soon turns into a memorable epic riddled with flashbacks from his past, pending accounts, and battles against jellyfish, minotaurs, hydras, cerberos, and all manner of magical creatures.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta

Ready at Dawn would repeat with the saga on PSP after the success of Chains of Olympus and would tell us what happened to Kratos once he finished Ares and took his place as God of War. The Ghost of Sparta story was tremendously original and he pulled a brother out of Kratos’ sleeve, Deimos, and even explained how his characteristic tattoo was made and what are the origins of the scar on his eye. In his new god of Olympus status, the Ghost of Sparta would have to search for his mother to try to unravel the mysteries surrounding his birth and family. Kratos would undertake another adventure to clarify what happened to Deimos, whom he had always believed to be dead, but who he now suspects is alive.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta

God of war ii

Kratos is unleashed as the God of War (Ghost of Sparta helps understand why) and, just as happened with Ares, Olympus gets tired of him and decides to get rid of him. Thus begins God of War II, in whose first level Zeus betrays the Spartan, takes away his powers and, finally, ends his life. But it wasn’t going to be that easy to kill the Ghost of Sparta. Kratos soon escapes from the underworld and sets out on another epic in search of the strength, equipment and allies necessary to take revenge on the gods, who have not only used him throughout his life but have now also betrayed him. They do not know the mistake they have made.

God of war 2

God of War III

The final battle between Kratos and Olympus, between the Titans and the sons of Zeus. The end of an unforgettable trilogy, with some of the best final matches remembered. With everything accumulated in God of War II and with his new “army” of allies, the Titans, Kratos pays off all the members of the Greek pantheon in God of War III, where he seeks to rid humanity of its whims and sleeplessness , that led him, like so many others, to perdition.

And finally we would have the GOTY of 2018, the installment that revolutionized and reinvented the saga and that has not only had us in suspense on PlayStation 4, but also seems that it will also do so on PlayStation 5. Kratos has gone as far as possible from Greece and has tried to forget her past, settle down and start a family. But the new Gods around him don’t seem willing to leave him alone. Although he has tried to protect his son from his destiny and condition of God, Norse mythology will force him to take measures and turn to him to come out alive from a new and unforgettable adventure.
