God of War Laufey will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, as disclosed by Santa Monica’s lead at San Diego Comic Con 2026.
During the panel, PlayStation confirmed the title’s availability on both digital download and physical disc, dispelling earlier speculation that the game would skip the cartridge route and arrive in 2027 as a full retail release.
Chief creative executive Cory Barlog also revealed a forthcoming standalone Kratos‑centric entry, a spin‑off that will delve deeper into the events foreshadowed in Laufey and tie directly to the storyline of God of War Ragnarok.
The 20‑minute gameplay preview presented at Sony’s State of Play stirred mixed reactions; critics noted the focus on Kratos’ wife rather than the Ghost of Sparta, drawing comments from creators such as David Jeffe. Nonetheless, fanfare over the new title remains strong.
Players will first encounter Kratos in Laufey during a tense scene where he and Atreus burn Faye’s body, a moment that transitions into a glimpse of Kratos’s involvement in the tapestry of events shown in the upcoming installments.
The panel also showcased the cast and crew, featuring actors like Deborah Ann Woll, Jack Quaid, Christopher Judge, and voice talent Ariel Lawrence, alongside the creative team led by Barlog.
