Amid the mayhem, Hamlin and Reddick opted to pit just as the caution approached the pit window; several cars stayed out, hoping the timing would be advantageous. Nemechek eventually took the lead after his stop but could not sustain it for the final laps, allowing Hamlin to retake the front after overtaking Elliott with only eight laps remaining.
