KCD Creative Director Fires Back at AI Slop Label for DLSS 5

DLSS 5 has ignited a fierce debate among players, yet Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s creative lead, Daniel Vavra, counters the criticism with a bold defense.

Vavra s Argument for DLSS 5

On X, Vavra juxtaposed a character model rendered without geometry changes, arguing that “the same model, but with DLSS 5, mirrors a ZBrush static render—light, shadows, texture, and detail all tightened by the AI.”

He accused the original KCD lighting system of falling short of the studio’s intent, noting that DLSS 5 lifts both artistry and realism. Vavra dismissed “AI slop” rumors, insisting the enhancement restored the game’s original vision.

He also highlighted KCD 2’s longstanding shadow problems—missing helmet, hat, and accessory shadows—expressing frustration over “not being able to render subtle details.” DLSS 5, he said, now remedies these shortcomings, though he acknowledged occasional frame‑rate dips.

Vavra urged that the technology indicates a path forward: “Huge potential for the future, and even older games can benefit from improved lighting.” His comments arrived after Nvidia’s showcase at SIGGRAPH 2026, where many players felt the effect was merely an AI filter.

Broader AI Moves at Warhorse

Despite Vavra’s departure from Warhorse Studios earlier this year, the studio’s recent staffing shift—replacing a Czech‑to‑English translator with an AI system—signals a willingness to lean on generative AI. This approach aligns with Vavra’s own stance, hinting that future installments, including a rumored The Lord of the Rings RPG, could incorporate AI to streamline development.
