Kevin Magnussen will pilot the No. 91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 entry in the inaugural NASCAR Cup race on the San Diego street circuit at Naval Base Coronado on June 21.
Project 91 returns to a historic military‑base venue
The 3.4‑mile course marks the first Cup event ever held on an active U.S. military installation. Magnussen joins teammates Ross Chastain, Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch, forming a four‑driver lineup that showcases Trackhouse’s part‑time “Project 91” program – a platform designed to transition world‑class racers into NASCAR competition.
Project 91’s alumni already include van Gisbergen, who secured a win on his Chicago Street Course debut in 2023 before earning a full‑time Cup seat, as well as former Formula 1 champion Kimi Raikkonen and IndyCar veteran Helio Castroneves.
Sponsorship, crew chief and Magnussen’s racing résumé
Qualcomm Technologies will emblazon the No. 91 car in San Diego, while Phil Surgen – the crew chief who guided Chastain to six Cup victories and a runner‑up finish in the 2022 championship – will oversee Magnussen’s pit operations.
The Danish driver arrives with a résumé spanning 185 Formula 1 starts between 2014 and 2024, highlighted by a debut podium and a pole position earned with Haas at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. Currently a full‑time competitor in the World Endurance Championship, Magnussen recently posted a runner‑up finish at Spa for the BMW M Team WRT hyper‑car squad and holds experience at Le Mans, the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and an overall IMSA victory in Detroit during the 2021 season.
Family racing heritage
Magnussen’s father, Jan, a seasoned sports‑car racer, made a solitary Cup start at Sonoma in 2010, impressively finishing 12th among a 43‑car field.
