Lando Norris predicted to outpace Russell in 2026 F1 standings

Lando Norris predicted to overtake George Russell in 2026 F1 standings

Guenther Steiner has declared that Lando Norris is poised to leapfrog George Russell into the Formula 1 runners‑up spot.

Steiner Signals Norris for Second

Speaking on The Red Flags Podcast after the first Spanish Grand Prix at the Madrig Circuit, the former Haas chief said Russell already leads the championship with 211 points, Kimi Antonelli tops the table with 292 and Norris sits fourth with 186.

Steiner stressed that the 2025 champion’s performance keeps him within striking distance of Russell, noting that “If he continues like this, he’ll be second.”

McLaren’s Spring Surge

McLaren’s early season setbacks gave way to a reversible upgrade package that produced two consecutive victories in Hungary and the Netherlands and a fourth‑place finish in Italy.

By the time Norris secured a podium turn‑over at the Spanish championship, his point tally put him squarely in the title race, a position his driver‑chat and Sky Sports interview at the Catalunya venue confirmed could swing the entire season.

Norris Eyes Full Championship

During a Sky Sports segment at the end of the Spanish race, Norris commented on McLaren’s newfound efficiency, saying “The team is working better than they’ve ever worked, and that level is world‑championship‑winning.”

He acknowledged the car still requires refinement, but added, “It’s a race against time, but we’ve proven we can win races this season, and momentum is building.”

In the same chat, Norris announced a contract extension through 2030, solidifying his commitment to the Woking outfit as he pushes for the title finish.

With the championship still wide open and performance gains still on the horizon, the next eight rounds could very well crown another McLaren driver, leaving Russell’s rear‑end fight for the final podium position more precarious than ever.
