After finding a game data file, a few hours later videos began to appear on the YouTube portal in the form of gameplay.

A preview file of Dead Island 2 from five years ago is being downloaded en masse after leaking through a thread in 4Chan. The development of the game, known for its difficulties, can now be seen on a multitude of gameplays through YouTube, the portal where some users who have been able to access this 2015 build are sharing videos as a gameplay.

The game, originally announced at E3 2014, was being developed by the Yager studio. However, back in 2015 both the German team and the publisher Deep Silver broke relationships, which ruined much of the work done until then. It was Sumo Digital who took over to continue it and do something more in line with its vision; although it did not come to fruition either. Finally, Dambuster (Homefront: The Revolution) took over what is expected to be the definitive version of Dead Island 2 for this generation of consoles.

In this way, the material that now comes to light corresponds to a discarded portion of the project. Both the aesthetics and the color palette and lighting of this still-in-development Yager build bear great similarities to the game’s first official trailers; both the nice promotional video for E3 2014 and the one for Gamescom 2014, where the first real gameplay was seen.

The information is verified by an own Yager developer originally involved in the development, it is not a fake. “I wasn’t expecting this, and while it’s literally an unfinished development version, it’s somehow okay that at least some people can see what we were working on” before it was canceled, he comments, citing the original Eurogamer message.

Still, Dead Island 2 is currently in development by Dambuster, a studio based in Nottingham, England, by former Crytek members. Its launch is planned for PS4, Xbox One and PC. After being acquired by THQ Nordic, they were commissioned to create Homefront: The Revolution; now they have before them their most important project.
