We interviewed Maggie Civantos, the Spanish actress who voices the character of La Desconocida from Destiny 2 in the expansion: Beyond the Light.
Destiny 2 is preparing to expand its universe even more with the arrival of the new great expansion: Beyond the Light, which will land on November 10 on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Google Stadia and later also to the new generation, specifically on December 8. With it, a good handful of novelties will arrive to the game among which we find the Stasis subclass and new very powerful electrical and dark powers.
Even so, today we meet here to bring you a surprise in the form of an interview. Specifically, we were able to chat with Maggie Civantos, a Spanish actress known for her starring role in series such as Vis a Vis and Las chicas del Cable. She has been in charge of voicing The Unknown, a beloved character in the Destiny community who will finally have a relevant role in Beyond the Light.
The start of a new adventure
“I received a call at a time when we were starting with the confinement in Spain and the truth is that it seemed like a very interesting proposal, because I had never done something like this and I like challenges. I knew the game and I knew that the community is super big and it is going to be a great opportunity, “explains Maggie,” Later we already had a meeting in which they explained the whole story to me and I saw that it made sense with things that I had done previously. ”.
Even so, it wasn’t until she got into the studio to record that she really discovered everything that the Unknown had hidden: “Sure, you know a number of characteristics of the character but I was surprised during the process that there is a lot of interpretation. I mean, it’s not going and that’s it, but you can really add your own touch no matter how much you have to look at the original. There is a little window to creativity and you could play with the intensity of your emotions, since not everything was giving instructions ”.
The keys to the character of the Unknown
As for the Unknown itself, Civantos details how he liked that the character had a certain duality between having a robotic appearance but at the same time a soul very similar to that of humans: “She has a bit of heart and conscience. In fact, my favorite part is the moment when the character tells a bit about his past and that’s when we can really get to know her. It was nice and nostalgic and I think the players are going to love that scene. “
Maggie highlights the fact that she came to feel close and connected with a character that she was not even seeing since, we remember, in video game dubbing, it is rare when actors and actresses have cinematics and scenes on video to guide you. We asked Civantos about this, as she has done other dubbing work before but never in the video game realm:
“Of course, it’s funny because in this case you have some waves and the description of the character, the story and especially at the end the direction. I think that in that sense I can support myself a lot because the group of professionals was spectacular and in the end it is the little you have. In my case, I also did not even have the previous experience of dubbing a video game, with the added pressure that it is Destiny and that you know that the community is very large and is waiting for this expansion with great enthusiasm. In the end, I always try to do my best, but here we also had the added bonus of voicing a character that everyone wants to know ”.
Maggie and video games; a retro past and a promising future
Currently Maggie does not have much free time to delve into the vast and wide world of video games and thus have a daily routine to play. Even so, when asked about her playful vein, she surprises us by assuring that as a child she loved Time Commando (1996):
“It was my favorite game at the time. It is another world very far from Destiny because the video game world has evolved very fast and of course, it has nothing to do with it. Now when I started working on this I was surprised by the great evolution that has taken place and that it is not just about shooting, but there is a great world of possibilities ”.
As for the discovery of the Destiny universe, he had to look for information because, without being a surprise to anyone, the game has a very rich and extensive lore: “Now I really want to play because there is something that has surprised and liked me and that is that Apart from the entertainment and the adrenaline involved in playing, the weapons and all this that sincerely interests me less, I like the design of the scenarios, the history and the different planets more. The creativity in this game is immense ”.
Something that Civantos highlights beyond the above is the cooperative and online aspect that Destiny 2 has, which can serve as a bridge to join other players and friends, especially in current times where the COVID-19 pandemic has caused us to spend months confined and unable to meet our loved ones. In this regard, Maggie assures that her dubbing work in Destiny 2 is the little she has been able to do this year:
“It is gathered that projects have fallen and others have been postponed to next year, as well as others that did not interest me and well, I suppose that this year has been a time for me to review and make decisions and sometimes to make them you have to stop, reflect and see a little where you want to go. You have to say no to things even if you feel very sorry and value your time ”. Even so, he assures that he really wants to return to the set and that everything returns to a certain normality, a feeling that we all share to a greater or lesser extent.
Lastly, we asked Civantos what his dream voice-over role would be. She remains restrained in answering that she would like to continue playing the Unknown in future expansions of the game and that, who knows, even in a future film dedicated to the franchise:
“I also feel that next time I will do even better, since this time being the first, I noticed that the first hours I was a little lost and I had to adapt to the environment until finally I was catching the wave. It has been a great experience and the next time I will be less of a rookie and I will have been able to play Destiny 2 a lot ”.
We can all do it from next November 10, when Beyond the Light becomes available and a good number of new adventures are unlocked, in addition to the plot surprises that await us. And, who knows, we might even meet “the Spanish Unknown” while exploring the imposing icy landscape of the moon Europa.
