Marc Marquez says he was just saving energy, not angry, after Austrian sprint podium

Marc Marquez denies anger on Austrian sprint podium: he was just 'saving energy'

Marc Marquez clarified that his quiet podium reaction after the Austrian sprint was a planned energy‑conservation tactic ahead of the Sunday’s main race.

Energy Management at the Austrian Sprint

During an interview preceding the Japanese Grand Prix, the reigning MotoGP champion admitted he deliberately stayed composed after finishing second to Jorge Martin of Aprilia, prioritising stamina for the subsequent long distance contest.

He said the Sprat race “uses up a lot of mental and physical energy” and that “smiling or laughing uses up energy,” prompting him to keep his breathing controlled and his focus sharp. Marquez added that the recoil from the same weekend’s San Marrino event had left him tired, so every effort was directed toward energy preservation.

Strategic Planning Through a Grueling Weekend

“All I was trying to do, and what I try to do every weekend, is to save as much energy as I can,” Marquez explained, highlighting the importance of conserving strength from Thursday to Sunday. He noted that the Spielberg circuit is “not ideal for my shoulder injury” because of its many right‑handed corners.

Despite the track’s neutral weather conditions, the accumulation of practice, race, podium and media duties throughout the day sharply increased fatigue, especially when the Austrian race followed immediately after Misano.

Shifting Mindset from Defensive to Attacking

In a turn from previous “damage‑limitation” tactics, Marquez said he no longer tends to remain defensive at be‑guard circuits. He declared that the focus is now on “attacking” at Motegi, while acknowledging that incidents—such as brake problems in Austria—may still compel a salvage operation.

He stressed that each point is valuable as the championship enters the final third, and that across all upcoming tracks his objective remains the same: to fight for every available position.

Implications for the Remaining Championship

The season will now feature two double‑header weekends and, if the Qatar Grand Prix proceeds, a triple‑header, meaning Marquez must continue to balance performance with recovery. The Japanese Grand Prix poses a high‑stakes platform, but the Ducati rider remains “low‑key” on podiums if the energy economy strategy is to hold.

With stress management refined and a more aggressive mindset in place, Marquez is primed to secure the points needed to challenge the title bid as the calendar progresses.
