While leading the 12‑lap sprint, Alex Marquez, riding for Gresini Racing on a Ducati, was gaining on leader Pedro Acosta when the factory KTM ahead suffered a sudden technical failure. The loss of velocity forced Alex’s bike into Acosta’s line, sending both machines airborne and throwing Alex into the right‑hand grass runoff. He lost consciousness after head impacts and a suspected injury to the C7 vertebra, although the vertebra remained intact.

Recovering from a foot injury and double surgery that also treated a shoulder problem, Marc stayed at his Barcelona residence and followed the race on television. He said the live commentary kept him informed of every development, allowing him to track his brother’s condition in real time. “Seeing a family member in that situation hit harder than any other crash on the grid,” he explained, adding that Johann Zarco’s incident the same weekend compounded the emotional toll.
After the race, Marc travelled to Mugello, where MotoGP’s medical director cleared him for the first free‑practice session. He described the experience as a stark reminder of the sport’s inherent dangers, noting that riders accept risk but truly comprehend it only when a close relative is involved.
