Front Aero and Under‑Floor Enhancements
While preserving the overall philosophy of the previous layout, the team overhauled the front wing, integrating numerous new elements that reshape airflow before it reaches the bargeboards and floor. The revised floor and bargeboards work in concert to optimise the under‑car vortex, crucial for extracting grip on the high‑speed sections of the circuit.
Novel Diffuser Architecture
Beyond the customary vertical fin attached to the rear crash structure, the Montreal‑spec W17 now features serrated profiles along the diffuser’s upper edge, a design cue reminiscent of the cockpit‑screen serrations employed by several rivals. This serration, combined with the expanded width, creates a more aggressive low‑pressure zone, boosting rear‑end stability.
Other teams have experimented with diffuser extensions grafted to the crash structure or even integrating the rear‑wing support, but Mercedes’ approach diverges by concentrating the development on the top segment of the diffuser, sidestepping the lateral waterfall zone that Ferrari has targeted.
Upper Waterfall Flow Deflector
A small, outward‑facing deflector now sits on the highest element of the waterfall section, highlighted in the reference images. Its purpose is to fine‑tune the airflow exiting the floor, cleaning the wake and reducing turbulence that can erode rear‑wing efficiency.
By addressing the upper waterfall profile rather than the outermost diffuser edge, Mercedes delivers a unique aerodynamic package that has, to date, been unseen on the grid.
All told, the Canadian upgrade pack delivers a holistic redesign—front wing, bargeboards, floor and a groundbreaking diffuser—that could reshape the performance balance as the season advances.
