MeriPodcast 14x09: Racing games up to 32 bits

The Meripodcast Retro team explores their memories to find the best arcade speed experiences from the early days of console and arcade games

The members of the Meripodcast Retro gather this week not to celebrate a special occasion, an anniversary or to take advantage of the arrival of the new generation to look back. In this case there is no excuse, simply the desire to talk about video games of the past and, more specifically, about some of our best (and worst) experiences with speed games; mainly cars but also motorcycles and vehicles rigged with machine guns, anything goes.

The big stars of speed

We go over all kinds of names, some well known but others less common. We are talking about unquestionable classics like Pole Position, which marked the way forward and is an absolute reference within the genre. We talked about classics like Hang-On and the importance of the booths in attracting the public, when the combination of mechanics and electronics created some of the most memorable arcade in history. We are talking about great exponents in computers like Lotus or Grand Prix, or of giants of the genre like Chase HQ. We also talked a bit about Outrun, although after the Sega special a few weeks ago and the program with our historical games for the summer we opted to give way to other names, without forgetting the greatness of the work of Yu Suzuki. Of course, games like the first Super Mario Kart could not be absent either, as were the first exponents of 3D driving such as Hard Drivin

With that we will reach the same imaginary frontier that separates 16 and 32 bits, speaking of Virtua Racing as the previous step to the arrival of 3D that would be indisputably imposed in the genre, going from being a minority approach to the only way that many They understand speed games today. We reserve ourselves for future programs to immerse ourselves in the later era, with the colossi that would appear in domestic format and still in recreational ones like Ridge Racer, Daytona, Sega Rally, Wipeout, F-Zero 64 and GX, Gran Turismo, Forza and so many others.
