Meripodcast 14x18: 30 years of Id Software, Doom and its offshoots

The retro Meripodcast team meets to discuss one of the most important games in videogame history

Id Software is 30 years old no more and no less, and although the team has notable previous names in its trajectory such as Commander Keen or Wolfenstein, the Meripodcast Retro team meets to talk about one in particular and the many that followed: Doom. The title that popularized the first-person shooter and that revolutionized the video game in its day is the central theme of our debate and inner journey through our memories, in which we will recall the first times we immersed ourselves in this experience, how we lived it and what we take from the great classic.

Rip and Tear

We talk about different conversions of a game that continues to reach any machine and system with a screen, we will talk about its sequel, mods and, of course, the many games that followed and sought their share of the cake: Hexen, Heretic, Blood, Redneck Rampage, Shadow Warrior … a whole generation of different FPS, with different innovations and ideas, but united by the roots that established the game created by Romero, Carmack and the rest of the giants that laid the foundations for the future. Of course, we will also have room to talk about one of the great rivals: Duke Nukem Forever, another tremendous success of its time and one of the few that was able to compete head to head thanks to its personality and technical advances. And while it is not the focus of the conversation, there will also be time to talk about Quake and the beginnings of polygonal 3D as the dominant force in the field of FPS.

Juan Arenas, Sergi “Motenai”, Joaquín Relaño, Carlos Forcada and Francisco Alberto Serrano enter, sawed-off shotgun in hand, in a great classic and in a whole batch of titles that transformed the sector in the 90s and whose echo is essential to understand the current landscape.
