A Minecraft Movie sequel has officially been christened “A Minecraft Movie Squared,” a title unveiled during the live‑streamed Minecraft Live event.
Title, Release Date and Visual Clues
The May 2026 livestream featured a behind‑the‑scenes tour in New Zealand before unveiling the new name, which suggests a bolder, possibly more otherworldly adventure than the original film. The square‑shaped logo, rendered in a deep purple hue, hints at a focus on the End dimension rather than the Overworld or Nether.
Studio announcements confirm that A Minecraft Movie Squared will hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
Cast Updates: Veterans Return, Fresh Faces Appear
Jack Black and Jason Momoa reprised their roles, joining Danielle Brooks as Dawn for another round of block‑building antics. Matt Berry, who voiced Nitwit in the first picture, returned in a new live‑action part – a turquoise‑tunic character that fans speculate could be the infamous Herobrine.
Kirsten Dunst was revealed as Alex, expanding the on‑screen roster and indicating that the sequel may explore narratives beyond Steve’s journey.
Production Team and Ongoing Filming
Director Jared Hess, responsible for the original film’s quirky tone, remains at the helm, reassuring audiences that the sequel aims to preserve the humor and adventure that defined its predecessor. Current footage shows the ensemble filming across New Zealand’s varied landscapes.
The live broadcast offered only a glimpse of the plot, with creators labeling most elements “top secret,” yet the clues dropped promise a storyline that pushes the franchise into new terrain.
As the crew continues shooting, the July 2027 release of A Minecraft Movie Squared stands poised to broaden the series’ cinematic reach.
