NetherRealm Studios presents an expansion that continues the story told in Mortal Kombat 11, again showing its commitment to the lone player.

A little over a year after its release, it is still easy to remember many of the virtues of Mortal Kombat 11: the customization system, the amount of single player content, the hallmark of NetherRealm identity… But today it is time to talk about its Story Mode , a full-fledged campaign of about six hours duration that consecrates the study led by Ed Boon, original creator of the saga with John Tobias, as the best of the genre in this section. That story told us how Kronika, a new character introduced in this installment, had to solve temporal dissonances by introducing time travel that sometimes showed us on screen the same character, younger and more veteran. That is true that it gave rise to somewhat confusing situations, but also to other very funny ones, and that is that the pranks of a young Johnny Cage and still arrogant to one older in years and with his head sitting had a certain grace … The case is that from the studio they have seen fit to offer us more and better of the same with something that is not usual in fighting games and is a great expansion for a player, with the name of Aftermath.

The times we have had to live led us to a virtual meeting with Boon himself and Dominic Cianciolo, director of narrative for Mortal Kombat 11, who presented us with this new content plus some surprises. Aftermath's story, we are told, will continue immediately after, once Kronika is defeated and Liu Kang becomes the new Timekeeper. "We've always supported games after launch, and in the case of Mortal Kombat 11 we've released new characters, including some guests like Joker, Spawn, or Terminator," Boon said. “Now we are going to add another three, but for the first time we are going to do it accompanied by a story. It is something completely new to us. ”

NetherRealm brings fun to the single player lover

If we look back, Kronika decided to go back in time to reestablish the balance between good and evil, something that gave rise to various and curious alliances between some of the most famous characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. "Now we have three new and unexpected guests: Fujin, Nightwolf and Shang Tsung, who come with bad news," Cianciolo anticipates us about this new story. "" In the original story they were trapped in time by Kronika and were only released when she died. The key to everything is the crown of Kronika, around which the entire narrative revolves. ”

One of the pillars on which the fantastic story mode of Mortal Kombat 11 was based were the cinematics, with animations and facial recreations of a quality never before seen in a fighting game. "Our cinematic team did a fantastic job recreating the script vision and creating great action sequences with the different powers of each member of the Mortal Kombat squad," says Cianciolo. “It is always exciting to work with these characters, it is a lot of fun and there are many possibilities. But working on a story that matters to fans is also important, so it's easy to be motivated to develop the best narrative content we can. ”

But as Boon says, this appetizing content for a player does not come alone, since it will be accompanied by three new characters, two of them introduced in this new plot: Fujin and Sheeva. "It's always exciting to bring back classic Mortal Kombat characters like Fujin and Sheeva," says Boon. "But of course we have an amazing guest like Robocop." Yes, you read correctly: one of the most famous heroes of the science fiction and action cinema of the 80s will be in Mortal Kombat 11, but it is time to introduce, or rather remember, the previous two.

Three new bombers arrive

"Fujin made his debut in Mortal Kombat 4, he is the God of the Wind and exercises his role as protector of the earth plane with his brother Raiden," Boon tells us. "He uses the power of the wind to control his sword, himself, and even his opponent." Indeed, in the gameplay shown we were able to glimpse a very fast character capable of linking some of the most extensive combos possible in the game.

However, he acknowledges that Sheeva is his favorite among the new inclusions. "I love grapplers – grip-centered based characters." His first appearance was in Mortal Kombat III, with four arms and being half human and half dragon and has low grips, over the head and in the air, in addition to having an unblockable teleportation stop, "he says. As she recounts, Sheeva debuted in the 1995 game, being a member of Shao Kahn's personal guard and was created as a result of fan requests for a playable character similar to Goro – with several arms – although after that third installment few more appearances would have.

“Finally, we find Robocop. It has the latest technology, and is excellent at keeping distances from its opponent with its pistol, although it also has a flamethrower and a shield ”, he specifies, although we also have to mention the retractable punch that Clarence Boddicker tests on his own meat in the movie 1987. In addition, as confirmed by Cianciolo, he will be played by Peter Weller, who was already the actor in charge of giving life to the character in the Paul Verhoeven film and who recently had a very moderate remake of success with Joel Kinnaman in the title role.

More characters, more history … It is not the only thing that is about to arrive in Mortal Kombat 11, since through a free update, all players will have access to new classic scenarios of the franchise, Stage Fatalities, completions that use the environment to give the macabre coup de grace to our opponent, and the arrival of the Friendship, movements loaded with good humor to end a fight with something more than good vibes.

For all this content there will be various options, according to Boon. Those who do not own the base game will have Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Kollection at their disposal, with absolutely everything released so far: the base game, the Aftermath expansion, the characters added after launch and even pre-order incentives. The reservations of this edition will also be able to immediately access all the content except the three new characters, obviously, and the Aftermath story. And of course, those who already have Mortal Kombat 11 will be able to purchase both Aftermath and this expansion plus the new Kombat Pack with Fujin, Sheeva and Robocop.

The date for the arrival of Aftermath to Mortal Kombat 11 is the next 26 of this same month of May, in its versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
