MotoGP immediately bans front holeshot devices, revises German GP grid layout

MotoGP bans front holeshot devices immediately, tweaks grid layout from German GP

MotoGP has cancelled the use of front holeshot devices from the Dutch Grand Prix, enforcing a ban that took effect immediately at the start of the race.

Immediate Ban on Front Holeshot Devices

Riders complained that the front holeshot required hard braking to release at the first corner and that it added cost without securing a racing advantage. The decision brings the long‑planned 2027 ban closer in time, leaving only the rear holeshot in play for the rest of the season.

Grid Expansion for the German GP at Sachsenring

From next month’s event, the grid layout will shift across all MotoGP classes. The inter‑cable gap will grow from three to four metres and each row will expand from nine to twelve metres, but the podium will remain three riders. The change follows recent safety concerns surrounding race starts.

Manufacturer Participation Limits

A new cap will limit each manufacturer to six riders from 2028, effectively restricting teams to one factory outfit and two customer lines. Ducati, for example, already fields three groups—factory, Gresini and VR46—while Pramac will transition to Yamaha in 2025.

Season Impact and Future Projections

These regulatory adjustments are part of the Concorde Agreement that keeps MotoGP’s five‑manufacturer roster, including Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, Honda and Yamaha, stable through 2031. The front holeshot ban and grid spacing lay groundwork for safer starts and clearer team structures heading into the remainder of the season.
