Logano’s Resurgence from the Bottom
After 18 races, Kay was 20th in the standings. His first victory after that lifted him into the top ten each week, and he finished ninth heading into the Chase.
Logano said in interviews, “That is extra motivation. When you hear those comments, I can say they don’t matter, but I’m also like ‘let me prove something to you’ (and) ‘let me show you we can do it in different ways and that this team can do it.”
Resetting Points and the Weight of Stage Wins
The current format resets points at the Chase start, yet still rewards race victories. Stage points now carry significant value, topping 400 points per race.
Kyle Larson noted, “I’ve scored the most stage points all year. If we didn’t have stage points, I bet I’d be three or five positions ahead.”
Preece admitted he “just wish there was more of a reward for finishing races rather than rewarding stage points.”
Drivers Weighing the New System
Denny Hamlin accepted that “we’re not even in the lead, so the comeback hasn’t actually fully happened but we have come a long way a lot further than I expected.” He also found the reset “legitimacy standpoint” fair.
Byron highlighted the broader advantage of winning races, stating, “Everyone was like, ‘Man, you got to be top five in points,’ but that was looking at the old Chase.”
Elliott summed it up, “Past that, anybody who’s winning any of these chase races is a legit contender or at least right there in the hunt.”
Chasing Consistency or Winning Momentum?
Christopher Bell, Larson, and Logano won the first three playoff races, despite being seeded sixth, seventh, and ninth. Denny Hamlin, the original leader, fell behind Larson by one point after three middling performances.
Larson emphasized, “I’m looking at a 55‑point deficit to a one‑point advantage. Stage points feel more important than ever, which you can argue is a good thing or not great.”
Current Landscape and Future Outlook
The recent win at Bristol and competitive outings at Darlington and Gateway left Logano only 16 points behind Larson with seven races left. The race dynamics continue to favor those who win early in the Chase while retaining consistent stage performance.
With stage points now integral, drivers in the closing months must balance finishing the race with exploiting every stage for extra points.
