Nintendo files a new patent related to amiibo

The company applies for the registration of a trademark linked to amiibo, image included, which details the processes of its NFC.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has applied for the registration of a new patent related to amiibo (2020-062383) in Japan. The Japanese company, which began its commercial journey with these interactive figures equipped with NFC technology in 2014, keeps alive its intention to continue exploring new possibilities of use or application, although they have not announced anything this time.

One of the details of this new patent, specifically on page 39 of the official PDF, is that both Yusuke Amano and Aya Kyogoku are named as inventors of it; We are talking about, on the one hand, one of the main directors of Nintendo, with experience in Splatoon, Splatoon 2, the series New Super Mario Bros. and the recent Animal Crossing: New Horizons. On the other hand, Kyogoku is the CEO of Nintendo EPD Production Group No. 5, primarily in charge of the Animal Crossing series for over a decade.

From this point on, the possibilities of this new Nintendo patent linked to amiibo are mere speculation. The information only explains the near-field communication (NFC) technology capabilities of amiibo figures controlled through a user.

There is a coincidence in the profiles of Amano and Kyogoku, and that is that they are both main members of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the recent new installment of the saga that is also compatible with amiibo. In this article we explain what possibilities the title offers with the figures.

According to official sources, the latest information about amiibo is that more than 39 million figures and more than 30 amiibo cards have been sold. The data, however, dates back to 2016, so it is not as up-to-date as would be desirable.

Nintendo Iberica confirmed in the summer of 2017 to FreeGameTips which were, so far, the 10 best-selling amiibo figures in Spain. Remarkable, that of Pikachu, Link, Mewtwo, Charizard and Super Mario from the Mario series. The next figures that should have their own amiibo figure are, if the same trend is followed, all the new fighters of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass.
