Oliver Solberg’s Sardinia Surge Positions Him for World Rally Championship Finale
Oliver Solberg flagged a 12.3‑second advantage on Friday’s first day at the Rally Italy Sardinia, stepping into the World Rally Championship title contest with a 21‑point gap over Elfyn Evans.
Friday’s Optimistic Opening Despite Puncture
Starting from third on the road, Solberg trimmed the lead held by Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and circumvented a slow puncture, finishing 12.3s ahead. Evans finished sixth overall, +1 m 08.9s behind Solberg, while fellow Toyota teammate Sami Pajari lay in fifth (+40.2s).
Road Position Advantage Grows Heading Into Saturday
The 24‑year‑old’s 12‑second edge and the advantageous road order give Solberg a chance to build on Saturday’s six stages. Pi on Saturday will likely help him keep the time leads if he maximises the early stages.
Solberg’s 35‑Point Target Sets The Stakes
“I’ve 100% got the shot,” Solberg said after Friday’s run, noting that a maximum 35‑point haul is his best approach to capture the title. “If I can pull away on Saturday and secure the final stages, the championship falls within reach.”
Evans Says He Needs 19 Points To Tie
Evans wary of Solberg’s threat, added, “Elfyn is not in a great position. He will not be for the rest of the weekend with the road cleaning.” He acknowledged that 19 points are required to guarantee the title regardless of competitors’ results.
Pajari Refuses To Lose Ground
Pajari, who started the weekend as Evans’ nearest rival, said, “Nothing is lost, so we need to keep pushing.” He noted that the Finn was easier than Elfyn on every stage but highlighted the importance of road position when facing blatant pressure.
The final day will test whether Solberg’s risk‑taking and the tactical use of his road position deliver a World Rally Championship victory.
