Oscar Piastri maintains no hurry to adjust his deal, stating that McLaren’s recent contract extension for Lando Norris eliminates any immediate pressure on his own negotiations.
McLaren’s Contract Landscape
McLaren announced last weekend that Norris would stay with the team until 2030, reinforcing the stability of the squad. Piastri first joined the outfit in 2023 under a contract due to expire that season, but a multi‑year extension signed a year ago keeps him tied until the end of 2028.
Stability Over Urgency
During a session at Monza, Piastri told Motorsport.com that his contract is solid for the foreseeable future, so he sees “no rush” to engage in talks. He emphasized that the team’s recent achievements – including a constructors’ championship and a drivers’ title – provide a framework he trusts.
The driver also noted that rumours of Max Verstappen courting McLaren had dissipated when Verstappen stayed with Red Bull. This clarification removed the speculation surrounding Piastri’s future and reinforced his focus on the current partnership.
Long‑Term Commitment Signaled
Piastri highlighted that while multi‑year deals differ in length, the important factor is the shared confidence between driver and team. He mentioned the presence of clauses suitable to both sides, suggesting that both parties retain flexibility. “It shows a commitment to working together, rather than short‑term deals,” he added, underscoring that even a two‑year contract offers more certainty than a single year.
