Pokémon Sword and Shield sell 6 million copies in three days

The new installments of the saga, the beginning of the eighth generation, become the fastest selling games on Nintendo Switch.

The Pokémon Company has confirmed in a statement that Pokémon Sword and Shield have sold more than 6 million units worldwide during its first week; in just three days, since they went on sale on a Friday. The titles, exclusive to Nintendo Switch, are the fastest selling of the console.

2 million units in Japan alone (physical and digital)

The eighth generation of the saga starts strongly. After confirming itself as the best releases of Nintendo Switch in the United Kingdom and Japan, the Japanese giant now anticipates that this success is worldwide (contemplates physical and digital sales), with figures never seen on the hybrid platform and with a particularly positive data for the Japanese market, where in total more than 2 million copies have been computed; in physical format they were 1.3 million, according to Famitsu.

However, Pokémon Sword and Shield point, at least, to the figures of the last two generations of the saga. Both Pokémon X / Y (2013, 3DS) and Pokémon Sun / Moon (2016, 3DS), sixth and seventh generation, have sold according to official Nintendo sources 16.42 million units and 16.17 million units, respectively, until September 2019. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the fastest selling game yet with 5 million copies worldwide in the same time period, three days. These results double the initial sales of Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee, which were 3 million units.

Expert analysts point out that these editions can exceed 20 million units sold worldwide, thus exceeding the performance of other successes such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is currently the best-selling video game of the console with 19.01 million units up to This past September 30.

One of the factors that are playing in favor of this adventure in the Galar region is the arrival of Nintendo Switch Lite, the only portable console of the family, where a type of very specific and traditional players of the Game Freak saga find the hardware with which they can feel more comfortable. Nintendo is aware of this.
