Pascal Wehrlein has warned that team orders could shape the outcome of the London E‑Prix, the season‑ending showdown that has 9 drivers mathematically still able to claim the Formula E championship.
Championship stakes and the league of rivals
The title race now rewards 58 points at the ExCeL, with the front four separated by merely 14 points. Jaguar’s Mitch Evans and Nissan’s Oliver Rowland each hold a single threat, while Porsche’s factory driver Wehrlein and the incumbent champion Jake Dennis stand as the duo of most pressure. Nico Mueller, Porsche’s second‑string, sits eighth in the standings, 44 points behind Dennis.
“We’re still in a battle for the most points on the grid, and the team championship counts as well,” Wehrlein said on Motorsport.com. “If there is nothing to lose, Nico will help me, but he also needs a strong result for the team championship.”
Concerns over manipulation of race flow
Wehrlein expressed unease that the level of tactical maneuvers has risen this season, especially after the high‑profile incident in Japan. Envision’s Sebastien Buemi, who carried a penalty, opted to use Attack Mode early and then slowed deliberately to allow teammate Joel Eriksson to finish higher. The manoeuvre froze a large portion of the field and left Wehrlein stranded in a collision with Antonio Felix da Costa, costing him a points finish.
“That move was far beyond the line, because he had a penalty and deliberately slowed half the field to help his teammate,” Wehrlein warned. “It can go very far, and that’s the only thing which for me is a bit uncertain this weekend, how it will be played and what the reaction will be.”
Future control measures and driver agency
“We should ban the radio,” Wehrlein added, referencing the growing influence of pit‑side instructions. “I know when the pit window is open and I have all the data on my steering wheel to make the right calls.” He stressed that the driver’s knowledge of race evolution ought to minimise the need for external intervention. The Gen 4 era is reportedly working to clamp down on such tactics, extending restrictions to manufacturers and customer teams alike.
