PS5: Dolby is excited about 3D audio

Instead of licensing Dolby Atmos technology for the PS5, Sony relies on its own 3D audio format, which is powered by the Tempest Engine. And even if Dolby lacks an important device, you are still impressed by it.

According to Sony, the Tempest Engine opens the door to a real revolution in the field of game audio, which can also be enjoyed without high-end audio hardware. The principle is comparable to the object-based sound from Dolby Atmos, DTS: X or Auro 3D, with which individual sounds can be placed in the room precisely and precisely.

Dolby Laboratories commented on Sony's approach as follows:

“Sony's mission to make 3D audio available to everyone on the PS5 is exciting. They remind us of the time when we started playing Dolby Atmos many years ago. There are now hundreds of millions of Dolby Atmos-enabled products on the market, in different product categories (TV, AVR, soundbar, mobile phone, PC, game console, headsets). ”

However, Dolby is not afraid for its own market, rather one has more competition that spurs new ambitions. At the same time, it confirms that 3D audio will be the future.

“We are delighted that Sony is dedicated to using 3D audio in its new console. This can only be interpreted as confirmation of the work we did in all entertainment genres when implementing Dolby Atmos on the devices that consumers use today. We will continue our mission to ensure that Dolby Atmos is supported as the standard for 3D audio on all endpoints. ”

According to Sony, you don't need new hardware for 3D audio either. A decent home cinema is certainly still the best prerequisite, but in the end 3D audio should also impress with simple TV speakers.
