The Moon Studios co-founder is convinced that cross-platform studios will work on a “lowest common denominator” basis.
The new generation of consoles will incorporate important innovations with respect to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. One of the improvements is undoubtedly the SSD hard drive, with which the load times and other inherent problems that until now were well present will be practically eliminated. In the case of PlayStation 5, its own technology is used. However, Thomas Mahler, creative director at Ori and the Will of the Wisps and co-founder of Moon Studios, says third-party developers are unlikely to use all of that potential.
He has communicated it in an entry published in ResetEra. “I would be surprised if most third party studios don’t just develop their video games from the lowest common denominator.” According to Mahler, there are “zero chances” that the levels will change “just because PS5 can load faster.” The reason, he wields, is that it is “too expensive,” not to mention the extra work involved.
“The super-fast PS5 SSD is great for first parties,” but for cross-platform studios, it doesn’t make economic “sense” to fit a single platform. “On PC and Xbox they will have to work with what is there, so there are two systems against one.
The news of PS5, very soon
PlayStation 5 will unveil its future at an event scheduled for June 11. After the events in the United States, where there have been anti-racism protests, many companies decided to stop their communications to give voice to the Black Lives Matter movement. Soy was one of them, as she made the decision to delay the event for a week. The company plans to show part of the catalog of its new console.
Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are still scheduled for later this year, although the specific date has not yet been reported; the price has not been made public either.
