PS5 will allow you to expand storage by additional SSDs this summer

Of the 825 GB of internal space on the PlayStation 5, useful is 667 GB. The announcement will occur with new SSDs pending to be announced.

Sony plans to make possible the expansion of the internal storage of PS5 starting this next summer, according to Bloomberg in a recent article. The new generation PlayStation console, equipped with 825 GB (667 GB useful for the user), has the option of including more additional SSD memory cards, as we already saw in the disassembly of the machine by the company itself, but it was not allowed to launch, but was planned “for a future update.”

The information ensures that this possibility will be accompanied by a firmware update for PS5 dedicated to the ventilation system of the console. With the aim of solving possible heating problems, this update will unlock the working speed of the fans to better balance those stress points, which now translate into higher temperature peaks.

This aspect was already promised in October, when Yasuhiro Otori, head of the PS5 design team, said in 4Gamer that “we plan to optimize the fan control based on that data” of the next video games on the way. Specifically, from Bloomberg they anticipate that the compatible cards in which they are working are the M.2 NVMe type.

You will need to open the console to install additional SSD drives

Currently, it is only possible to connect external SSD units via USB for PlayStation 4 games. For its part, PS5 games cannot be stored in other additional units, but they are only allowed to be installed in the standard internal SSD included in the hardware. It should be remembered that, to install the additional SSD storage units, it will be necessary to remove the top cover – as Sony already showed in detail in a video – and insert these external cards inside the chassis.
