PS5 & Xbox Series X won't have the same impact as cloud gaming, says a Stadia developer

Although the cloud gaming service Google Stadia is not yet so well received, its own developers believe that streaming technology will have the greatest impact. The power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X will hardly influence this field, no matter which components Sony or Microsoft install in it.

This is the assessment of Alex Hutchinson (Journey to the Savage Planet), whose studio Typhoon was only recently acquired by Google. It should come as no surprise that he therefore speaks a little detrimentally about the traditional consoles.

It says:

“The impact of SSDs on next-generation development will be next to none, nor will the Xbox Series X DDR6 memory have any major impact from a design perspective.”

In the future, Hutchinson will fully rely on the cloud, since it can perform much more complex calculations than, for example, in a single Zen 2 CPU from PS5 & Co.

"I think the cloud and the ability to run large-scale simulations and persistance will be the big new things of this generation, not so much the boxes themselves, but what connects them if you don't look."

Interestingly enough, there is also a comment from Microsoft, which neither Sony nor Nintendo see as their biggest competitor. Rather, it is Google and Amazon that are in rivalry with their huge cloud and data centers for Microsoft's Azure and XCloud.
