Engine‑Related Revival Sparks Concerns
During the two session day’s first part Verstappen complained that the power unit was oddly losing revolutions at the apex of Turn 3. He said the rear of the car “grabs, locks up” and withdrawing throttle forced the engine to catch up, producing wheelspin out of the corner.
Team‑radio quotes echoed this, with rookie Arvid Lindblad noting that the sister running team had also faced the issue for some time but only now it was proving fatal for the senior squad. Technical director Pierre Wache admitted a root‑level engine problem must be solved before Saturday’s qualifying.

Verstappen finished fourth in both practice sessions, over half a second slower than pole‑sitter Kimi Antonelli. He described the package’s effect as “hit‑and‑miss”, emphasizing that while the new weight layout and higher downforce appear an improvement, the immediate benefit is unclear without restoring consistent grip.
Engine‑management concerns remain at the core of the issue, with Wache noting “we have a problem on how we manage the engine and how the car is operating”. He expects clearer downforce levels after overnight development. The team’s immediate target is to re‑balance the RB22, ensuring the resurgence of the new form can translate into concrete lap‑time gains for both drivers.
