Max Verstappen was forced to retire from the Monaco Grand Prix after his power unit seized during the formation lap, halting the Red Bull driver’s race just seconds after the start.
Engine failure precedes the start
During the formation lap, Verstappen noticed irregularities with the engine’s RPM window and struggled to match the required range during the pre‑start ritual.
When he released the clutch, the power unit collapsed completely, ending the race as the cars were still circulating.
Team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed on Motorsport.com that the “issue developed on the formation lap and gave us no chance.” He added the precise nature of the failure to the engineering team.
Swap already on the agenda
Mekies also disclosed that the first power unit of the Dutchman for the season had been slated for replacement after the Monaco weekend.
“It was the very first PU of Max this season, which was planned to be changed after Monaco,” he said, echoing a common strategy at the circuit.
Indeed, Monaco’s tight layout does not demand maximum power, leading many teams to run an older unit before deploying a fresh one for a high‑speed track such as Barcelona.
Red Bull’s preparation for Catalonia
Despite the setback, the team’s pace in qualifying remained strong, and the management expressed confidence in addressing the fault.
Verstappen, sitting seventh in the standings, maintained a constructive tone, noting that “the frustration is real, but it’s not a massive blow to his championship hopes.”
“I just hope that we understand what it is and that we can fix it for the future,” he said.
Barcelona set to test the new power unit
Verstappen identified the upcoming Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as the decisive trial for Red Bull’s power plant and car setup.
He recalled the team’s relative weakness on low‑speed circuits, stating, “I hope with the changes that we made to the car it will be better.”
Red Bull’s engineers will evaluate the updated package’s performance overnight, aiming to secure a competitive edge as the season progresses.
