Red Dead Redemption turns 10

The Rockstar Games cowboy classic blows out the candles and the developer celebrates her birthday with an entry on her website.

The developers of Grand Theft Auto left the contemporary era to travel back in time. Red Dead Redemption, the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver, brought the concept of the open world to the United States in the early 1900s. It was on May 18, 2009 (21 of the same month in Europe) when Rockstar Games published this classic set in the Wild West. A story of revenge, like the good Westerns, full of gunmen and bandits wanted by the law. The title is 10 years old and its developer has celebrated it with a special post that includes some artistic works related to the video game.

"This week marks the tenth anniversary of Red Dead Redemption, Jon Marston's journey to bury his past and reunite with his family," says Rockstar on its official website. "To honor the moment and all the love the game has received over the years, we've compiled some of your favorite moments." At the entrance, its creators collect different artistic pieces made by fans, be it conceptual arts, music covers or even cosplays.

The end of the Wild West

If in Red Dead Redemption 2 (sequel, but plot prequel to the first installment) we witness the decline of the bandits, back in the late nineteenth century, the story of John Marston fits his final pieces in the first video game. In 1911, the United States is in a process of profound change. Few years remain for World War I, and the era of the outlaws will soon be consumed. The law persecutes criminals, so they no longer have carte blanche to operate as they did in previous decades, outside the authorities. Not only the Sheriff's cell awaits them, but also the gallows of executions.

It all starts at the Armadillo railway station, where Marston meets with a contact from federal agents. From there, they head to Fort Mercer to confront Williamson and his gang of thugs. However, our protagonist will receive a few shots and fall on the desert sands. Fortunately, a ranchera will rescue him, so he can recover to live a new day and plot the fall of his enemies.

Red Dead Redemption can be played on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 (via PlayStation Now) and Xbox One, via backward compatibility. Although it was never commercialized on PC, the sequel is available both on this platform and on current-generation consoles. In addition, Xbox Game Pass subscribers have the option of accessing it, as it was added to the catalog just a few days ago.
